Text selection was based on the New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature (NCBEL). If an author (or for an anonymous work, the title) appears in NCBEL, then their works are eligible for inclusion. Selection was intended to range over a wide variety of subject areas, to reflect the true nature of the print record of the period. In general, first editions of a works in English were prioritized, although there are a number of works in other languages, notably Latin and Welsh, included and sometimes a second or later edition of a work was chosen if there was a compelling reason to do so.

Image sets were sent to external keying companies for transcription and basic encoding. Quality assurance was then carried out by editorial teams in Oxford and Michigan. 5% (or 5 pages, whichever is the greater) of each text was proofread for accuracy and those which did not meet QA standards were returned to the keyers to be redone. After proofreading, the encoding was enhanced and/or corrected and characters marked as illegible were corrected where possible up to a limit of 100 instances per text. Any remaining illegibles were encoded as <gap>s. Understanding these processes should make clear that, while the overall quality of TCP data is very good, some errors will remain and some readable characters will be marked as illegible. Users should bear in mind that in all likelihood such instances will never have been looked at by a TCP editor.

The texts were encoded and linked to page images in accordance with level 4 of the TEI in Libraries guidelines.

Copies of the texts have been issued variously as SGML (TCP schema; ASCII text with mnemonic sdata character entities); displayable XML (TCP schema; characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or text strings within braces); or lossless XML (TEI P5, characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or TEI g elements).

MY chief aim in Publiſhing this ſmall Piece, is for the benefit of Seamen, who is known to be the chief Bulwark of our Kingdoms, and upon whoſe undaunted Courage, Reſolution and Conduct, our Liberties and Properties wholly depend; who vindicate our Rights with the expence of their deareſt Blood. The undeſerved Diſappointments they have received, unknown to your Honour, for ſome Years paſt; and the many Loſſes they have ſuſtain'd for want of good Inſtructions, has induced me to the greateſt part of this work, which I hope will be of good uſe to them if duly applyed.

I don't mean there is any unjuſt thing put upon them by their Superior Officers, who has a paternal care over them, but that they have not conſulted a due Information for their own Intereſt.

This I can ſafely ſay, the informing of Sea-men was my only aim in this ſmall Piece, when I firſt ſet my Reſolutions upon it; but having a Manuſcript by me, writ by the famous Sir John Narbrough, I was advis'd by ſome Friends to put ſome material and uſeful things therein mentioned, in this, which I have done exactly from the Original.

EVery Artiſt knows, That the Art of Navigation conſiſteth chiefly in Arithmetick; and becauſe Decimal Fractions is ſo much wanting, and ſo little uſed amongſt Seamen, it will not be amiſs to go through all the Rules thereof, and then ſhew the uſe of each Rule in its proper place; ſo that the ingenious Artiſt may with a great deal of Facility go through that long and tedious Work, often occaſioned by Vulgar Fractions: Not but that I leave every Man to his own fancy, to uſe that which he in his own Opinion thinks beſt.

It's true, Vulgar Fractions is unavoidable in ſome Caſes, but in that which is chiefly deſign'd here, Decimal Fractions may be uſed in every reſpect eaſier and more correct than Vulgar.

CHAP. I. Of Decimal Arithmetick. Notation of Decimals.

A Decimal is that by which is diſtinguiſhed the Parts of a Unite: And is decreaſed from Unity to ſo many Tenth Parts of a Unite. For Unity is divided into ten parts, and every tenth part is called a Prime, every hundredth part is a Second, and every thouſand part a third, &c. So as whole Numbers increaſe by Tens from the Unites place towards the left hand, ſo Decimals decreaſe by Tens from the Unites Place towards the right hand, as may appear by the following Example.

For 10 Primes is one Unite, and 10 Seconds is one Prime, and 10 Thirds is one Second, and 10 Fourths is one Third, &c. So that every place towards the left, is ten times leſs than the preceding Figure: For preponing of Cyphers, leſſen the following Figure in a tenfold manner; for (.2) is two Primes, or two Tenths of an Integer or Unite, but (.02) is but two Seconds, or two hundreth parts of an Unite. Cyphers after a Decimal neither augment nor diminiſh the value of the Decimal.

A Decimal is always diſtinguiſhed from a whole Number by a Prick or Period, as in the Numbers following.

The Numerators are only ſet down, the Denominators being known by the number of places in the Numerator; for if the Numerator conſiſt but of one place as .1, it is 1/10, if of two, as .22 it is 22/100, if of three, as .235 it is 235/1000, &c.

I ſhall inſiſt no more upon Notation of Decimals, the foregoing being ſufficient, but ſhall proceed to Addition.

Addition of Decimals.

Addition is the adding of Sums together, and making one intire Sum of two or more; you muſt take particular care in placing whole Number under whole Number, and Decimal under Decimal, and Unites under Unites, and Tens under Tens.

Suppoſe 325.7 were to be added to 463.72, I place them one under another in manner following.

To 463.72 Add 325.7 Sum 789.42

Obſerve always to prick off as many Decimals in the Total, as there is in any of the Sums to be added together.

Example.

To 365.23 Add 23.20 2.03 Sum 390.46

An Example of Addition, as to Timber or Board Meaſure.

Note, That all intire Quantities, as Feet, Yards, Ells, Ounces, Pounds, and Hundred Weights, are divided into a hundred Parts, therefore the one fourth of any one of theſe is .25, the half is .50, and the three fourths is .75.

There is three Boards of theſe following dimenſions; what is the Sum of Feet and Parts?

  Feet. Parts. The firſt Board 246.25 The ſecond 43.50 The third 16.26 The Sum 306.01

The Total Sum is 306 Foot, and one hundredth part of a Foot.

Addition of Mony.

A pound Sterling is likewiſe divided into 100 parts. So .05 is the Decimal for one ſhilling, and .10 for two ſhillings, and .15 for three ſhillings, &c.

Suppoſe I were to add 3 ſhillings and 4 pence to 2 ſhillings and 3 pence.

The Decimal for 3 ſhill. is .15 The Decimal for 2 ſhill. is .10 The Decimal for 4 pence is .0166667 The Decimal for 3 pence is .0125 Sum .2791667

It is very hard for the Learner to know the value of this Total, being he is not come the length of Multiplication, which is the only Rule uſeful in this caſe. The general Rule is, every Prime or Unite in the Total Sum is 2 ſhillings value, and every 5 Seconds is one ſhilling, and the ſuperplus of the Seconds above 5 is ſo many ten farthings, and the number of Digits in the thirds place is ſo many farthings: All the reſt of the Decimals to the right being of no value. The .2 Primes in the Total is 4 ſhillings, and the 5 Seconds of the ſeven is one ſhilling, and the two remaining is 20 farthings; the 9 Thirds added thereto makes 29 farthings, which is 7 pence farthing: but by reaſon the number is above 25, the farthing muſt be cut off. The ſum is 5 ſhill. and 7 pence.

So much for Addition of Decimals.
Subtraction of Decimals.

Subtraction is the taking a ſmall ſum from or out of a greater, as if you would take 7 l. 5 s. 6 d.out of ten pounds 5 ſhillings and 6 pence, the remainder muſt be 3 pounds; or if from 265.2, you would take 153.1, &c.

Example.

From 105.25 Foot of Superficial Meaſure ſubtract 97.25.

Multiplication of Decimals.

In Multiplication of Decimals, the method is the ſame as in whole Numbers; only you are to prick off ſo many Decimals towards the right hand in the Product, as there is Decimals in both Multiplicator and Multiplicand: As ſuppoſe I were to multiply 26.75 by 35, there muſt be two Decimals prickt off in the Product, by reaſon there is two in the Multiplicand.

Here you ſee in the fourth Example, there is in the Multiplicator and Multiplicand 7 Decimals; therefore I prick off as many in the Product as there is in both.

Note, That as whole Numbers multiply'd by whole Numbers in ••• aſe their value, ſo Decimals multiply 〈◊〉 by Decimals decreaſe their value, by reaſon the Product is removed farther from Unity, than either of the Decimals given to be multiply'd, as ſhall appear by the following Example.

It will ſometimes fall out, that there are not ſo many Figures in the Product as there are Decimals in the Multiplicand and Multiplicator; in ſuch caſes you muſt place Cyphers before the Figures, till they be equal: As you ſhall ſee in the following Work.

Deviſion of Decimals.

We ſhall in the next place proceed to Diviſion of Decimals, which is the moſt difficult of all the reſt; all the difficulty being to find the true value of the Quotient.

The general Rule is, when you have finiſhed your Diviſion, to prick off ſo many Figures to the right hand, as will make the Decimals in the Diviſor equal in number to thoſe in the Dividend, and the Figures to the left are whole Numbers.

Example 1.

Let 64.326 be divided by 32.4.

You ſee in the foregoing work, that there is three Decimals in the Dividend, and one in the Diviſor; therefore I make that 1 in the Diviſor, and 2 in the Quotient equal to the 3 in the Dividend.

Let 28. be divided by 32.6

In this Example the Diviſor 32.6 is greater than 28. the Dividend; in this and all other ſuch caſes, you muſt place a competent number of Cyphers behind the Dividend; and if it be a whole Number, you are to divide, you muſt prick off the Cyphers from the whole Numbers and then proceed in your Diviſion as you were to divide whole Numbers.

Example 4.

To divide a Decimal Fraction by a Decimal Fraction.

Let .900 be divided by .05

Would not one think it very ſtrange a Decimal Fraction divided by a Decimal Fraction, ſhould bring forth a whole Number in the Quotient. But I ſhall make it very plain, that it muſt be ſo and no otherways, by a reaſonable Demonſtration.

By the firſt Example, you ſee I divide .900 by .05, and the Quotient I find to be 18.0, that is, becauſe there is three Decimals in the Dividend and one in the Diviſor, I make up the number of thoſe in the Dividend, by taking one Decimal from the Quotient, and adding to the 2 in the Diviſor.

Now the nature of the Queſtion is thus: I deſire to know how many times 5 Seconds in 9 Primes? The Anſwer is 18. For there is 18 times 5 Seconds in 9 Primes.

If it fall out at any time, that there is not ſo many Figures in the Quotient, as will make theſe in the Diviſor equal in Number to thoſe in the Dividend; then you muſt prepone Cyphers before the Quotient to the left hand, as in the following Example.

I ſhall give you an Example as to the Uſe and Application of Diviſion of Decimal Fractions, to the end that thoſe who intend to uſe Decimals may the better underſtand what they are going about.

Suppoſe I were to divide 10 ſhillings amongſt 20 Men, the Decimal for 10 ſhillings is .50; therefore I divide my Decimal .50 by the number of Men 20, and the Quotient will be .025, which is the Decimal equal to 6 pence; for if you multiply .025 by 12, and double the Product, it will be 6 pence.

I could give ſeveral Examples of this kind, but the various Examples that will happen in the following work, will in its proper place, give a clearer Demonſtration than can be here expected; ſo I ſhall refer the Learner to the practice in General, and proceed to my intended work.

CHAP. II. To find the Burthen, and how to Rigg a SHIP.

BEfore we proceed to the Rigging of a Ship, it is proper we ſhould know her Burthen; they having a dependency upon each other. For you can't know how to Rigg a Ship without you know the length and breadth of her, no more than you can know 〈◊〉 Burthen; but when ſhe is once R ••• d (if according to Art or Proportion) you may know her Burthen without taking the length and breadth: Therefore I ſay, we ſhall begin gradually firſt to know her Burthen, and ſo go on.

To find the Burthen of any Ship.

Take the length of the Koel, and the breadth of the Beam, from Plank to Plank, and multiply the one by the other, and the Product multiply by the depth of the Hold; and the laſt Product divide by 100, and the Quotient is the Burthen of a Ship; or, to ſave the trouble of Diviſion, cut off two Figures to the right hand of the laſt Product, and the remaining Figures to the left hand is equal to the Ships Burthen.

Example.

The length of a Ships Keel is 68 Foot. The breadth of the Beam is 26 Foot.   408   136   1768 The depth is — 12   3536   1768 The Ships Burthen is 212.16 Tun

There is ſeveral Diviſors, as 97. 98. 99. and ſome uſe 93. but I am ſure that 100 is the moſt honeſt and exact Diviſor.

The length of the Main-Maſt is twice and a half the breadth of the Beam.

Multiply the length of the Main-maſt by 8, and divide by 9 for the length of the Fore-maſt or Boltſpreat.

The true length of the Fore-maſt is 8/9 of the Main-maſt.

The Miſſon-maſt is ¾ the length of the Fore-maſt.

The length of the Main-Yard is the breadth of the Beam, and ½ the length of the Keel.

The Fore-Yard is 8/9 the length of the Main-Yard.

The Sprit-Sail-Yard is 8/9 the length of the Fore-Yard, the Craggick-Yard ⅖ the length of the Main-Yard.

To find the Lengths and Thickneſs of Maſts and Yards by the Pen.

We ſhall begin with the Main-maſt of a Ship, whoſe length of Keel is 73. Foot, breadth of the Beam 28.5 Foot, the depth of the Hold 12. Foot.

The only Rule to find the length of the Main-maſt, is to add the breadth of the Beam and the depth of the Hold together, and divide the Product by 1.5, and the Quotient is the Yards in length; the Main-maſt of the Ship muſt be,

The breadth of the Beam 28.5 The depth of the Hold 12.0

The length of the Main-maſt ſought is 27 Yards or 81 Foot.

Thoſe that are not very expert at Diviſion, may make uſe of the following Multiplicator, which will perform the fame as the Diviſion does, and will be a great deal eaſier for the Learner, if he do but obſerve to prick off the Decimals to the Right hand, as is directed in the foregoing Work.

Example.

The Sum of the breadth and depth is 40.5, the which I multiply by the proper Multiplicator .6666, and the Product is 26.99730 which is 26 yard, and 99 hundredth parts of a yard, which wants not one ſecond to make it 28 yards, equal to the former Work.

To find the thickneſs of the foregoing Maſt or any other maſt of the Ship, you are to take the length of the Maſt mentioned in the foregoing Table, and ſay by the Rule of Proportion,

If 84 give 28 (as in the Table) what will 81 give.

Here we find the thickneſs of the Main-maſt of the propounded Ship to be 27 foot; now to find the thickneſs or length of the other Maſts of the ſame Ship.

If for the Thickneſs of any of the Maſts, you muſt it work by the foregoing Rule, taking out the length of the Maſt you require from the foregoing Table; and as the length there requires ſo much, what will the length found require?

You muſt find your lengths of the ſeveral Maſts and Yards by the Rule before directed.

Suppoſe I was to find the length of the Fore-maſt, having the length of the Main-maſt; I multiply the length of the Main-maſt by 8, and divides the Product by 9, and the Quotient is the length of the Fore-maſt required.

As for Example, the length of my Main-maſt is 81 Foot, the which I multiply by 8, and divides by 9, and the Quotient is 72, the length of the Fore-maſt ſought.

Now, if you would have the length of the Mizon-maſt, being that it is ¾ the length of the Fore-maſt; you muſt multiply the length of the Fore-maſt by 3, and divide the Product by 4, and the Quotient is the length of the Mizon-maſt; the Fore-Yard is in proportion to the Main-yard, as the Fore-maſt is in proportion to the Main-maſt.

Thus we have inſerted moſt material things as to a Ships Rigging: but becauſe the way here inſerted will be troubleſome and tedious, unleſs to ſome Artiſts who take pleaſure therein, we ſhall ſet down a plain and eaſy way, by which any Ship may be Rigg'd with a great deal of eaſe: And ſhall be as follows.

Rigging for the Fore-maſt.

⅔ The length of the Maſt is the length of the Shrouds.

⅓ the length of Shrouds is the length of the Penants.

The length of the Maſt is the length of the Stay.

Thrice the length of the Shrouds is the length of the Lifts.

Three times the length of the Shrouds is the length of the Clugarnets.

Twice the length of the Maſt from the Deck to the Croſs-trees, is the length of the Buntlines.

Twice the length of the Main-yard is the length of the Leech-lines.

An Alphabetical DICTIONARY of all the Names of the Members or Parts of a Ship, with an Explanation of the ſame, and how they are diſpoſed of; together with the Sea Terms uſed in any Ship. A. ANchors, There are ſeveral ſorts; the greateſt is the Sheet Anchor, never uſed but in extraordinary neceſſity; the ſmalleſt is the Kedge Anchor, which is uſed in calm Weather and a flow Stream; the Stream Anchor is ſomewhat bigger than the Kedge Anchor. Then there is the Firſt, Second and Third Anchors, and are called Bow Anchors. The parts of an Anchor are called the Shank, the Flook, the Shoulder, the Beam, the Eye, the Ring, the Stock. 〈1 page duplicate〉 〈1 page duplicate〉 The Anchor is a Peek, that is, the Anchor is right under the Hawſe or Hole, through which the Cable runs out. The Anchor is a Cock-Bell, that is, hangs up and down by the Ships ſide. The Anchor is Fowle, that is, the Cable is got about the Flook. Abaft, is the Stern part of the Ship. Aft, The Stern part alſo. The Maſt hangs Aft, that is, towards the Stern. How chear ye Fore and Aft? How fairs all the Ships Crew. Amain, ſignifies yield, and is uſed in a Fight. An Awning, An Old Sail or ſuch like, ſupported with Oars like a Canopy over the Deck, to ſhade from the Sun. B. BIllage, is the breadth of the Floor, when ſhe lyes aground. Billage Water, is that which can't come to the Pump. Bilged, is when a Ship ſtrikes upon a Rock, or any thing that breaks her Planks. Buttocks, is the breadth of her After part by the Rudder. Beds, is a Plat-form to raiſe the Carriage of a Gun, ſo as ſhe may be level'd out at the Port. Bluff, or Bluff-headed, is when a Ship has an upright Stern. Beams, is the Supporters of the Orlop or Deck. Butt-ends, is the Fore-end of the Planks where they join under-water. Bend or Wail, is the out-moſt Timbers on the Ships-ſides. Bolts, are long pieces of Iron, ſharp at one end for driving into the Planks upon ſeveral occaſions, ſuch as fixing the Tackle of your Ordnance to, or for driving out of Wood-nails, or bringing the Planks to the Ships ſide, and ſeveral other uſes. Bow, the Bow is the broadeſt part of the Ship, before which compaſſeth the Stern. Beak, the Beak-head is without the Ship before the Fore-Caſtle, ſupported by the Main Knee, a place for men to eaſe themſelves. The Coller of the Main-Stay is faſtned to it. Bits, are two great pieces of Timber, through which a croſs piece goeth; they are placed Abaft the Manger in the Ships Loof, to belay the Cable thereto when they ride at Anchor. Blocks or Pullies, are pieces of Wood with Wheels in them, through which all the running Ropes do run. Block and Block, is when they hale any Tackle that the two Blocks do meet. Fiſh-Block, is a Block by which they Hale up the Flook of the Anchor to the Ships Bow. Bulk-head, is any partition made up with ſealing, ſuch as the Bread-room. Bracketts, are little carv'd Knees to ſupport the Gallerys. Bittacles, are little Wooden Pins for nailing the Compaſs-box withal. Barnacles, are little Fiſhes like Red Worms, which will eat through the Planks of a Ship if ſhe be not ſheathed. Breaming, is waſhing or burning off all the filth with Reads or Broom. Breaſt-Ropes, doth keep the Yards cloſe to the Maſts. Brales, are ſmall Ropes, which come down before the Sail, with which we Furle our Sails a Croſs; they belong only to the two Courſes and the Miſſen Bolt-Rope, is that Rope which is ſewed about every Sail. Buntlines, is but a ſmall Rope made faſt to the midſt of the Boltrope, to trice or draw up the Bunt of the Sail when you farthel it. Braces, are Ropes, two whereof belong to all Yards but the Miſſen, and are reeved to their ends, by which they ſquare, or traverſe the Yards. Bowling, is made faſt to the Leech of the Sail, about the midſt to make it ſtand the ſharper or cloſer by a Wind. Sharp the main Bowling, is to hale it taut. Hale up the Bowling, is to pull it hard or forward on: Check the Bouling is to let it be more ſlack. Bouſe, is to pull down the Sail or eaſe the Tacks in a ſtiff Gale, or take off the Bonnet. Bonnet or Drabler, is a ſhort Sail to take off or put on to the fore-courſe, or the main-Courſe. Boling knott, is a knot ſo firmly faſtned to the Creengles of the Sails, that they can't ſlip or be unty'd. Bails, is a piece of Tar'd Canvas for a Tilt to the Boat. Bucket-Rope, is ty'd to the Bucket to draw Water. Boy-Rope, is that which is tyed to the Anchor and Boy. Boat-rope, is that by which the Ship doth tow her Boat. A Bight; is to hold by any part of a Coile. A Bitter, is the Turn of a Cable about the Bitts, and veer it out by little, and little. Bitters-end, is that part of a Cable doth ſtay within Board. Bending, is to tye two Ropés or Cables together. Breaſt-faſt, is a Rope by which you hale a Ships Head to a Wharf or the like. Buoys, are cloſe hoop'd Barrels like Tankards, to ſhew you the Anchor. Can Buoys, are much larger for ſhewing of Danger. Ballaſt, is Gravel, Stones, or Lead, ſo diſpoſed as the Ship may lye neither to one ſide or other, but even upon the Water. Bear up, is to make the Ship go large before the Wind, Bear off, is to thruſt from you, Bear in, is to go nigh the Land or Harbour. Breeze, is a Wind which blows out of the Sea in Fair Weather. Boarding, is to enter a Ship. To Bale, is to lade Water out of the Hold. Trench the Ballaſt, is to ſeparate it. The Ballaſt ſhoots, or runs to one ſide. The Piece of Ordnance doth bear, or lies right with the Mark. Bear up round, that is, put her right before the Wind. Bellage, to make faſt any running Rope. A Birth, a place to Moore a Ship in. A Bight, any part of a Rope between the ends. A Boom, a long Pole to ſpread out the Clew of the ſtudding Sail. Board and board, is when two ſhips touch each other. To make a Board, is to turn to the Windward. To Break Bulk, is to open the Hold and take out Goods. C. Cradle, is a frame of Timber made along the ſides of a Ship, for ſafety in Launching. A Crab is an Engine of Wood, of three Claws, placed on the Ground, for the Launching of ſhips, or heaving them into the Docks. Clamps, are long thick Planks, which lye under the ends of the Beams, and Timbers of the ſecond Deck, or third Deck, or Orlop. Cambering, is when a Deck lyes compaſſing. Chain-wail, is a broad Timber; a little above which the Chains and Shrouds are faſtned, to ſpread the Shrouds the wider. Culver-tail'd, is to let one Timber into another. Carlings, are Timbers lying along the Ship from Beam to Beam, whereon the Ledges do reſt, whereunto the Planks of the Decks are faſtned. Carling knees, are Timber coming thwart the Ship, and bears up the Deck on both ſides. Comings, are Timbers and Planks which bears the Deck ſo up, that the Water can't enter the Hatches. Capſtain, is in the nature of a Windis, to wind, or weigh up the Anchors, Sails, Top-maſts, Ordnance, or the like, being a great piece of Wood ſtanding upright on the Deck. Comb, is a little piece of Wood with two holes in it, to bring the the Fore-Tacks aboard. The Catt, is a ſhort piece of Timber aloft, right over the Hauſe, in the end whereof is a Hook and two Shivers, for tricing up the Anchor to the top of the Fore-Caſtle. Cubbrige-heads, wherein are placed, ſome things to clear the Deck. The Counter, is a hollow Arching betwixt the lower part of the Gallery and the Tranſome. The Compaſs, is ſo well known to every Sea-man that I need not deſcribe it. Catt-holes, are over the Ports right with the Capſtain, to heave the Ship a ſtern by a Cable or Hawſer. Calking, is beating Okum into every Seam or betwixt Plank and Plank. Calking, Iron is made in the form of a Chiſſel. Careene, is to make a Ship ſo light as ſhe may lye upon one ſide in calm water, ſo as you may ſee her Keel. Cap, is a piece of ſquare Timber with a round hole in it to receive the Top-maſt or Flag-ſtaff, to keep them ſteddy or ſtrong. Croſſe-Trees, are at the head of the maſts, the one ſet into the other, ſtrongly boulted with the treſſel-Trees to keep up the Top-maſt, which are faſtned in them. Coller, is a great Rope which comes about the Head and Boulſprit, the other end to the head of the Main-maſt. A Cock, is the Pin which goes through the Block and Center of the Wheel, or Pully. Chains, are ſtrong Plates of Iron, faſt boulted into the Ships ſide, by the Chain wail. Catharpings, are ſmall Ropes run in little blocks from one ſide of the Ship to the other, near the upper Deck, to keep the ſhrowds right. Can-hooks are two hooks faſtned to the one end of a Rope with a nooſe, and ſerve to take in or out Hogſheads or other goods. Creengles, are little Ropes ſpliced into the Boul • Ropes of all ſails of Main and Fore-maſt, to which the bowling Bridles are made faſt, Clew-garnet, is a Rope made faſt to the Clew of the Sail, and from thence runs in a Block to the middle of the Yard, which ſerves to hale up the Clew of the ſail, and the Clew-line is the ſame to the Top-ſail, Top-gallant, and Sprit-ſails. The Clews of a Sail in the lower corner next the Sheet and Tacks. Courſes, are the fore, or Main ſails. Caburn, is a ſmall line to make a bend of two Cables, or to ſeaſe the Tackles. Caskets, are ſmall Ropes made faſt to the Gromits. Cat-rope, is to hale up the Cat. Cheſt-rope, is added to the Boat rope to keep her from ſhearing. Canting-coins, are little pieces of wood made with a ſharp edge to lye betwixt the Casks. Standing-coins, are pipe ſtaves to make the Canting-coins faſt. To Chaſe, is to purſue a Ship. To Cond, or Cun, is to guide a Ship. The Courſe, is that point of the Compaſs, on which the Ship ſails. Cut the Sail, that is to unfurl it, and let it fall down. D. DRive Bolts, is a long piece of Iron to drive out a Tree-na • l. Decks, are the Floors of a Ship. A Fluſh Deck, is when it lyes upon a ſtreight Line fore and aft from ſtem to ſtern. The Daile, is a Trough wherein the water that comes from the Pump is convey'd out of the Ship. The David, is a ſhort piece of Timber, with a notch in it for a block to lye for haling up the Anchor. A Drabler, is a ſhort ſail, to take off or put to the Fore-ſail or Main-ſail. Drift-ſail, is only uſed in a Storm, veered out right a head by ſheets, to keep her head right upon the Sea. Dead Water, is the Eddy water at the ſtern of the Ship. Diſembogue, is to go out of the Mouth of a Gulph. Diſpart, is to find the difference of Diameters of Metles, betwixt the breach and Mouth of a Cannon. E. EArings, is that part of the Buntrope, which at all the four Corners of the Sail is left open as it were a Ring. Entring-rope, it is ty'd by the Ships ſide to hold by as you go up the entring Ladder. End for End, is when the Cable runneth clear out of the Hawſe. Eaſe the Helm, is to let her ſail to the eewar d. F. FAſhion-pieces, are two Timbers which riſes from the ſtern-poſt, to which are faſtned all the Planks that reach to the after part of the Ship. Fore-lock-bolts, hath an Eye at the end, wherein a cotril of Iron is driven to hinder it from ſtarting back. Furling Lines, are ſmall Lines made faſt to the Top-ſail, Top-gallant and Mizon Yard Arms. Free the Boat, is to caſt out the water. Flook, is that part of an Anchor that doth ſtick into the Ground. Fake, is one circle of any Cable when Coil'd. Fore-Top-Sail, is the uppermoſt Sail belonging to the Fore-Maſt. Fenders, are pieces of old Hawſers or Blocks hung about the Ship to defend her from the Key. Fore Courſe, is the Fore ſail. A Fathom is ſix Foot. To Farthel or Furl a Sail, is to wrap it up cloſe together, and tye it with little ſtrings faſt to the Yard. To Fiſh a Maſt or Yard, is to faſten a piece of Timber or Plank to it to ſtrengthen it, which Plank is called a Fiſh. To lower or ſtrike the Flag, is to put it down upon the Cap, which ſignifies to Yield. To heave out the Flag is to wrap it about the Staff. G. THE Garbord, is the firſt Plank next to the Keel on the outſide. The Garbord-ſtroke, is the firſt ſeam next the Keel. Gun-wail, is the upmoſt wail, which goeth about the Ships waſte at the upmoſt Deck. Gudgions, is an Iron work whereby the Tiller is hung to the Rudder. Graving, is under water, and is a white mixture of Tallow, Sope and Brimſtone, to preſerve the ſhips Calking, and make her Glib, to paſs the quicker through the water. A Guy, is a Rope brought from the Fore-maſt to the winding Tackle, uſed for the haling in or out the Ordnance. Goaring, is a ſloaping part of a ſail. A Gang, is a ſelect Company of Men appointed for the Boatſwain to Man the Boat. Graples or Graplings, is a ſmall Anchor with four Flooks which commonly ſerves for a Boats Anchor. Gert, is when the Cable is ſo taut, that upon the turning of a Tide the Ship can't go over it. The Ships Gauge, is ſo many Foot as ſhe draws or ſinks in the Water. The weather Gauge, is when one Ship has the wind of another, or to weather of her. A Loom Gale, is a little wind. One Ship Gale, away from another; in fair weather when there is but little wind, that Ship that Sails faſteſt and hath moſt wind, is ſaid to gale away. To Greave a Ship, is to bring her to lye dry a ground, ſo that you may burn off her old Filth. The Ship Gripes, that is turns her head more to the wind then ſhe ſhould. H. A Ships Hull, is the whole body of the Ship without the Rigging. The Howld, is the Inner-part of the Hull. Hatches, are the entrances into the Howld. The Hawſes, are the great round Holes where the Cables go out at, under the Beak head. A Horſe, is a rope made faſt to the Fore-maſt Shroudes and the Sprit-ſail ſheets, to keep them clear of the Anchor Flooks. Head-lines, are the Ropes that makes all the ſails faſt to the Yard. Hold water, is to ſtay the Boat. Hale, is to pull. To over Hale, is when a rope is haled too ſtiff, to hale it the contrary way to ſlacken it. To Hale a Ship, is to call to her company to know whither they are bound, and to ſalute a Ship with Trumpets is Hailing. Hôa, is whither are you bound? Hâe, is what do you ſay, or what would you ſay? Freſh the Hawſe, is to veere, or let more Cable out at the Hawſe, if ſo be that the Cable which lyes therein is fretted, or chaffed. Clear the Hawſe, is to untwiſt two Cables that are twiſted by accident. Thwart the Hawſe, is when a Ship lyes croſs the Hawſe, or with her ſtern juſt before another Ships Hawſe. The Ship Heels, that is when a Ship inclines more to one ſide then the other. To Hitch, is to catch hold. Rumige the Howld, is to remove any thing therein, or to clear the goods. Stow the Howld, is to take goods into the Howld. Hoiſe up the Yards, is to hale up the Yards. Hulling, is when a Ship at Sea takes in all her ſails. I. JƲnks, are pieces of wood hung about the Ships ſides to keep them from bruiſing. K. THE Keel, is the loweſt Timber in the Ship, being a great Tree hewn according to her burthen, to which all other Timber of the Ship is faſtned. The Keelſon, is another long Timber, like the Keel, which lyes in the inſide, fixed with ſtrong Iron Bolts to the Keel through the floor Timber. Knees, are crooked Timbers which are bolted to the Beams, in every part of the Ship. Knights, are two great pieces of wood carved with the Head of a Man upon them, wherein is four ſhivers a piece, three for the Hall-yards and one for the top Rope to run in. Knevells, are ſmall pieces of wood nailed to the inſide of the Ship, to belay the ſheets and Racks unto. Knettles, are two Rope yarns twiſted together, and a knot on each end whereunto to ſeaſe a block, a rope, or the like. Keel-rope, is of hair to ſcower the Limber-holes, which they pull from ſtern to ſtem to keep them clean. L. THE Limber-holes, are through the Floor, Timber or Rings, thwart the Keel, to bring the water to the Well for the Pump. Lockers, are ſeats in the Cabin, Quarter Deck, or round Houſe, to put any thing in. Lannier, is that which makes the Mainmaſt-ſtay faſt to a Coller. Leefanngs, is a rope reeved into the Creengles of the Courſes, when we would hale in the bottom of a ſail to • aſh on a Bonnet, or take in the ſail. Leech-lines, are ſmall ropes made faſt to the Leech of the Top-ſails. The Leech of a ſail, is the outward part of the skirt of a ſail, from the earing to the Clew. The Lifts, are two ropes which belong to all yards, arms, to make them hang higher or lower, or top the yards, as they call it. Legs, are ſmall Ropes put through the bolt-ropes of the Main or Fore-ſail, near a foot long, ſpliced each end into the other in the Leech of the ſail, with a little eye whereunto the Martnets are faſtned. Latchets, are ſmall lines ſewed in the Bonnets and Drablers, to laſh or make them faſt to the Courſe. Loof-hook, is a Tackle with two hooks, one to hitch into a Chingle of the Main, or Fore-ſail in the Bolt-rope in the Leech of the ſail by the Clew, and the other to the ſtrap ſpliced to the Cheſters, to put down the ſail to eaſe the Tacks in a ſwift Gale. The Ship Labours, that is Rowls and tumbles much. Land-fall, is a term uſed when we expect to ſee Land. Land-locked, is when the land lies round about us ſo that no point is open to the Sea. Land-to, a Ship is ſaid to lye Land-to when ſhe is at ſo great a diſtance that you can only diſcern the Land. To Laſh, is to bind. Launch a Ship, is to put her forth of the Dock into the Water. Launch-hôe, is when a yard is hoiſted high enough, and is meant hoiſt no more. Lay the Land, is to looſe ſight of it. The Lee-ſhore, is that ſhore againſt which the wind blows. Have a ca • e of the Lee-latch, that is, take heed the Ship go not too much to the Leeward. A Ship lyes by the Lee, that it has all her ſails, lying, flat againſt the maſts and ſhrouds. M. MAnger, is a Circle of Plank they build either before the Mainmaſt or Abaft, to keep out the water, which ſometimes comes in at the Hawſes in a rough Sea. A Made maſt, a Maſt greater then of one Tree. Marting, is a ſmall untwiſted line Well tarr'd, to ſeaſe the ends of Ropes, ſo that they may not untwiſt. Marting Spike, is a ſmall piece of Iron to ſplice Ropes withal, or to open the Bolt-rope when you ſew the Sail. The Main-ſail, is the Great Sail or Courſe belonging to the Main-maſt. The Main-top-ſail, is the Sail immediately above that. The Mizen-ſail, is the great ſail of the Mizen-maſt. The Mizen Top-ſail, is next above that. A Monk-ſeam, is a flat ſeam in the ſail. Set the Mizon, that is, fit the Mizon-ſail. Change the Mizon, that is, bring the Yard to the other ſide of the Maſt. Speek the Mizon, is to bring the Yard right up and down by the Maſt Spell the Mizon, that is, let go the Sheet and Peek it up. To moor a Ship, is to lay out her Anchors in ſuch manner, as ſhe may ride moſt conveniently and ſafe. N. No near, is to eaſe the Helm, and let the ſhip fall to the Leeward. Nealed to, that is, deep Water cloſe aboard the ſhore. Neap Tides, are Tides when the Moon is in the ſecond or laſt Quarter, and are neither ſo high nor low as the ſpring Tides. A Ship is Beneaped, is when the Water is not high enough to bring a ſhip out of a Dock, or make her float. O. Orlop, is a Deck. Okum, is Old Ropes torn in pieces, like Tow or Furds, the which is beat into every ſeam of the ſhip to make her tight. Over-rigg'd, is when the Ropes of a ſhip are not ſizable to her Burthen. Offing, is the open ſea from the ſhore, or the midſt of any great ſtream. It Overblows, is when we can bear no Top-ſail. An Over-grown Sea, is a great Wave or Billow. The Ship ſtands for the Offing, that is, ſhe ſtands to the Sea-ward. Over-ſet, is turning over. P. Ports, are ſquare Holes in the ſides of the Ship for the Ordnance to lye out at, offenſive or defenſive. A Pump, is a boared Tree with a Sucker belonging to it, to ſuck the Water out of the Well of the Ship. The Pump ſucks, is when the Water being out, the Pump ſucks nothing but Froth and Wind. A bare Pump, is a little piece of Latten or Reed, to pump the Beer or Water out of the Cask. The Prow, is the Deck abaft the Fore-Caſtle. Pintels, is Hooks or Bolts that goes into Iron Sockets, whereby the Rudder hangs. Parſling, is a Liſt of Canvas, which being well ſmear'd with hot Pitch, poured upon, is laid all along the ſeams of the Decks. Partners, are ſtrong Timbers bolted to the Beams incircling the Maſts to keep them ſteady. The Pillow, is that Timber whereon the Boultſpreat reſteth. The Puttocks, go from the Shrouds of the Maſts to the Top, Cap, or Bowl, which is a round Timber on the head of every Maſt. Parrels, are round Balls of Wood which go round the maſt, and are fixed to the Yards, which make them ſlip up and down eaſy. A Parbunckle, is two Ropes that have at each end a Nooſe or Lump, that being croſſed, you may ſet any Veſſel that hath but one head upon them, bringing the Loops over the upper end, to fix the Tackle to them; and you may heave them out or in as you pleaſe. Puddings, are Ropes nailed round the Yards Arms cloſe to the end, to ſave the Robins from galling upon the Yards, or to put about the Anchors Ring to ſave the Clinch of the Cable from Galling. Preventer Rope, is a little rope ceaſed croſs over the Ties, that if one pair of them ſhould break, the other ſhould not run through the Rams head to endanger the Yard. Port Ropes, Are theſe which hale up the Gun-ports. Pay more Cable, is when you are going out with your Anchor, you would have them to throw over more Cable. To pay a Seam, is to lay hot Pitch and Tar over a Caulked Seam. To ride a Peek, is when the Yards are ſo, that they make the Figure of St. Andrews Croſs. The Capſtain purchaſes apace, that is, draws in much Cable in a ſhort time. Q. A Ships Quarter, is from the Mainmaſt aftward. Quoynes, are ſlenting pieces of Timber or Wedges to heighten the breach of a Cannon. Quarter-Winds, are when the Wind comes in abaft the main Shrouds even with the Quarter. A Quoil, is a Rope or Cable laid up round, one fack over another. R. Rungs, are the Floor Timbers, or ground Timbers thwart the Keel. Rungheads, is the bending place at the end of the Rungs. Ribs, are Arching Timbers which lye in the inſide of the Ship whereunto the Planks are boulted, which make the Hould and Hull. Riſing Timbers, are the Hooks, or ground Timbers, or Foot-Hooks, placed on the Keel. The Run, is that part of the Ship under-water, which grows narrower by degrees from the Floor Timbers along the ſtern Poſt. The Rake, is ſo much of a Ships Hull as hangs over both ends of the Keel. Riders, are great binders, which go from the Beams under the Orlop to the Keel in great Ships, to ſtrengthen all. Ring-bolts, are uſed for the Tackle of the Ordnance. To raiſe a Deck, is to put it higher. Ramſhead, is a great Block with three Shivers, through which are paſſed the Hallyards, and in a hole at the end of it, is reeved the Tyes, belonging to the Fore-end Main-Hallyard. The Roul, is that through which the Whipſtaff goeth, which is a piece of wood the Steers-man holdeth in his hand to ſteer withal. The Rudder, is a great piece of Timber like unto a Plank, made leſſer or greater according to the Ships Burthen hung at the ſtern of the Ship upon Hooks and Hinges, to guide the Ship. Rigging, is all the Ropes or Cordage belonging to the Maſts and Yards of a Ship. Running-Ropes, are ſuch Ropes as run through Blocks or Pullies. Ratlings, are the ſmall Ropes which go croſs the Shrouds, for ſteps to go up the Shrouds upon. Robbins, are little lines reeved into the Eyelot-holes of the Sail, to make faſt the Sail to the Yard. Rope-Yarns, are the Yarns of any Rope untwiſted. Rudder-Rope, is reeved through the ſtern Poſt, and goeth through the head of the Rudder; the ends whereof are ſpliced together, to ſave the Rudder, if it ſhould be unhinged, or ſtruck off the Irons. Rouſing, is to pull the Slackneſs of any Rope into the Ship. Rouſe-Trees, are ſmall Timbers to bear up the Goarings from the half Deck to the Fore-Caſtle. A Reach, is the Diſtance between any two Points of Land that lye oppoſite to one another. To Reeve, is to put a Rope through a Block. Ʋn-reeve, is to pull a Rope out of a Block. Ride, is when a Ship is held faſt by an Anchor, ſo that ſhe doth not drive. To ride athwart, is to ride with the Ships-ſide to the Tide. To ride between Wind and Tide, is when the Wind and Tide are contrary, and are in ſtrength equal. A Road, is any place near the Land, where Ships may ride at Anchor. To Ride Hawſe-fall, is in a Rough Sea, when the Water breaks into the Hawſes. Rouſe in, that is, hale in the Cable or Hawſer. S. The Stem, is a great piece of Timber compaſſing and fixed into the Keel, whereunto all the Butt ends of the Planks foreward are fixed. The Stern Poſt, is another great Timer, which is let into the Keel at the other end. Sweep or Mould, is the Timber which compaſſeth at the ground Timber, on the foot Hooks. Skarfing, is one piece of Wood let into another. Sleepers, are Timbers which are boulted ſtrongly to the Foot-Hooks on each ſide the Keelſom. Spurkits, are the ſpaces betwixt the Timbers along the ſhip ſides in all parts but them in the Howle below the ſleepers. A Scuttle Hatch, is a little ſquare Hole we call the ſcuttle, where but one Man can go down into the ſhip. Skupper-Leathers, are pieces of Leather nailed upon the out-ſides of the Skupper-holes, to keep the ſea out, and theſe Holes are round the Deck, to let the Pump Water out. The Stearage, is a Room before the Great Cabin, where he that ſteareth the Ship ſtands. The Stern, is the Hind part of the ſhip where the Rudder is. Stays, are great Ropes, for ſtaying the Maſts, the Main ſlay is made faſt by a Lannier to a Coller which comes round the Head and Boltſprit. A Shiver, is a little Wheel fixed with an Iron Pin into a Block or Pulley. Shrowds, are great Ropes which go up either ſides of all Maſts, and go through Blocks with ſeveral Holes, called Dead Eyes. Standing-Ropes, are the ſhrouds and ſtays, becauſe they are not removed, unleſs it be upon extraordinary occaſion. The Snap-Block, is that Block which is uſed in hoiſting the Goods in or out. A Sling, is to make faſt any Cask, Yard or Gun in a pair of Slings, which are made of a Rope ſpliced at either end into it ſelf, with one Eye at either end, ſo long as to be ſufficient to receive the Cask. Sheats, are bent to the Clews of all Sails; in low Sails they hale aft the Clew of the Sail, but in Top Sails, they hale them home, or cloſe to the Yards Arm. Sinnet, is a ſtring made of Rope-Yarn, platted in three parts, which being beat flat, it is uſed to ſarve Ropes or Mats. Sarve, is when a Rope is ty'd round with a piece of Mat, Sinnet or Canvas, to ſave it from fretting. Seaſing, is to bind faſt any rope together. A ſeaſen, is the Rope by which the Boat doth Ride by the Ships ſide. Spun-yarn, is Rope-Yarn made ſmall at the end, and ſo ſpun to each other. Splicing, is to let one Ropes End into another, ſo as they may be as firm as the other part of the Rope. Sheep-ſhank, is a kind of a Knot, they caſt upon the runner of Tacle when it is too long to take in the goods, ſo they can ſhorten a rope without cutting. A ſhallop, are ſmall Boats belonging to Great Ships. A ſpell, is a relief of a new gang for the Boat to relieve the Rowers. Shearing, is when the Boat ſwings to and again. Splice a Cable, is to faſten two ends together to add to the length of it. Shank-panter, is a ſhort Chain faſtned under the foremaſt ſhrowds, to the Ships ſide, and at the other end a Rope to make faſt the Anchor to the Bowe. To ſtop, is when you come to an Anchor and veers out your Cable. Studding ſails, are bolts of Canvas which are extended along the ſide of the Main-Sail, the which we boom out with a Boom or long Pole. Sprit-ſail, are the Sails of the Boult-ſprit. To ſtow, is to put the Goods in order into the Hould. The Ballaſt ſhoots, is to run to one ſide or ſhift. Strike, That is when the Goods are down into the Hould, ſo as the Tackle may be made looſe, they ſay ſtrike. To ſeaſe, Is to make faſt. The ſhip ſeals, That is when on a ſudden ſhe lies down on one ſide, and tumbles from one ſide to the other. The ſhip ſends, that is, her Head or Stern falls deep in the Trough or Hollow of the Sea. The ſhip is ſewed, or the Water is gone from her. The ſhip ſtears, or goes not ſtrieght forward. To ſound, is to try with a Lead and Line the depth of Water. The ſhip hath ſpent her Maſts, that is, ſhe hath loſt them all by fowl Weather. Their Maſts are ſhot by the Board, that is, when they are loſt in a Fight. The ſail is ſplit, or blown in pieces. The ſhip ſpooms, that is, goes right before the Wind without Sails. Spring Tides, are the Tides at New and Full Moon. The Bowſprit ſteeves, or ſtands too Upright. T. Trunions, or Tree-nails, is Wooden Pins about a foot long, which go through the Planks and Ribs of the Ship, to keep them ſtrongly together. Tranſome, is a Timber lyes thwart the Stern, and doth lay out the bredth of the Ship at the Buttocks. The Tiller, is a ſtrong piece of Wood made faſt to the Rudder. Tauntmaſted, is when a Ship is over maſted, ſo that ſhe laboureth too much a Hull. The Treſtel-trees, are bolted into the Croſs Trees at the Head of the Maſt, to keep in the Top Maſt which are faſtned in them. Tawt the ſhrowds or ſtay, is when they are over ſlack to make them ſtiffer. The Tyes, are the Ropes by which the Yards do hang. The Tackles, are ropes run in three parts with two blocks, one whereof has a Hook to heave any thing in or out of the Ship. Tacks, are great Ropes which bring forward the Clew of the Sail to make it ſtand faſt by a Wind. Tarpawling, is a piece of Tarr'd Canvaſs, to cover the Hoops in the ſtern of a Boat in Wet Weather. Thoughts, are the Seats whereon the Rowers ſit. Thowls, are ſmall Pins put into the ſide of the Boat, to bear the Oars when they Row. Trim the Boat, is to keep her ſtreight. Top-Gallant-ſail, is the ſail of the Maſt next the ſhip ſtern. Trench the Ballaſt, that is to Divide it to find the Lake. Tack about, that is to bring the ſhips Head about to lye the other way. Talle off the ſheets, that is, hale off the ſheats of the main Sail. A Windward Tide, is when the Wind and Tide is contrary. A Tide-Gate, is when the Tide runs ſtrong. To Tide it up, is to go with Tide againſt the Wind. To Tow, is to drag any thing after the Ship. To Traverſe, is the Ships way. V. To Veer, is to let out more Rope. Vea, Vea, Vea, is a term when they pull all ſtrongly together. W. Whoodings, are Planks faſtned into the Ships ſtern. Whelps, are ſhort pieces of Wood made faſt to the Capſtain, to keep the Cable from coming too high in turning about. The Windes, is a piece of Timber like a Role, which is forced about with Hand-ſpakes in ſmall Ships, and performs the ſame as Capſtain. The Waſt, is that part of the Ship betwixt the Main-maſt and the Fore-Caſtle. The Whip-ſtaff, is that which the ſteers-man holds in his hand to ſteer by. Wind the Boat, is to bring her Head the other way. The Waſt-Cloaths, is a long red Cloath edged on each ſide with Calico, that goeth round about the Ship, when ſhe is ingaged in a Fight. The ſhip is Walt, that is wants Ballaſt. To Weather a ſhip, is to go to Windward of her. To Wind a ſhip, is to bring her Head about. How Winds the ſhip, is what point of the Compaſs doth ſhe lye with her Head. To Would, is to bind Ropes about a Maſt. Y. The ſhip yaws, that is, goes in and out and does not ſtear ſteady. Yonkers, are the young Foremaſt Men. Beyare at the Helm, that is, be careful at the Helm.

Goods taken are periſhable, in which Caſe the ſaid Judge ſhall take Bail for ſuch Goods in order to the Sail thereof, as he might have done before the making this Act, yet ſo as to be ſubject to ſuch manner of Sail and Diſtribution as is particularly provided by this Act.

And be it further Enacted, That as ſoon as conveniently may be, after the ſaid Goods, Merchandizes, or other things, ſhall be adjudged Prize, and Landed, as aforeſaid, the ſame ſhall be by the Commiſſioners for Prizes, or their Officers or Agents, in the preſence of ſuch Perſons as ſhall be intruſted by the Commiſſioners of the Cuſtoms, and by the Owners, Officers, and Mariners of ſuch Ship of War, publickly and openly Sold by Inch of Candle to the beſt Advantage (publick Notice being firſt given by the ſpace of Fourteen Days at the Market Croſs, or other moſt publick place of the ſaid Port, as alſo upon the Exchange in the Port of London, of the Quantity or Quality of the Goods, Merchandizes and Things to be Sold, and of the Time and Place of Sale.

And be it further Enacted, That out of the Proceed of ſuch Sail, the Subſidy of Tonnage and Poundage, and all other duties and Impoſitions payable to Their Majeſties for ſuch Goods, Merchandizes and Things, ſhall be deducted and Anſwered to Their Majeſties, and the Neat Proceed of the ſaid Sale, after ſuch Deductions in Cafe where ſuch Prize was taken by any Private Man of War, ſhall be divided into five Parts, of which four Parts ſhall be anſwered and paid to the Perſons interested in the Privateer or Privateers which took the ſaid Prize, and the other fifth Part ſhall be anſwered and paid to Their Majeſties, Their Heirs and Succeſſors; And in caſe any ſuch Prize was taken by any Private Man of War, the Ship or Veſſel ſo Surprized or Taken as Prize, and all the Arms, Ammunition, Tackle, Cables, Anchors, Sails, and Furniture thereof, ſhall be Had, Taken, and enjoyed by the Perſons Intereſted in the Private Man of War which took the ſame; And in caſe ſuch Prize was taken by any of Their Majeſties Ships of War, the ſaid Near Proceed thereof, after ſuch Sale, as aforeſaid, and after the Duties and Impoſitions payable to Their Majeſties Deducted, as aforeſaid, ſhall be divided into three equal Parts, One Third Part whereof ſhall be anſwered and paid to the Commander or Captain, Mariners and Seamen ſurprizing and taking the ſame, to be diſturbed according to the uſual Cuſtom of the Sea for Sharing of Prizes, or ſuch Declarations or Orders as have been, or ſhall be made by Their Majeſties in that behalf.

Provided, that one third Part thereof ſhall be distributed amongſt the Ships Crew, one third Part to be paid to the Treaſurer of Their Majeſties Navy, for relief of Sick and Wounded Mariners and Seamen, and the Widows, Children, and Impotent Parents of Preſons ſlain in their Majeſties ſervice at Sea, and the other third Part to the uſe of their Majeſties, their Heirs and Succeſſors; And in caſe ſuch Prize was taken by any Merchant Ship or Ships employed in their Majeſties ſervice, the Neat Proceed thereof after ſuch Sale, as aforeſaid, and after the Duties, Impoſitions, and Cuſtoms to their Majeſties deducted, as aforeſaid, ſhall be divided into three equal Parts, one third part to be anſwered and paid to the Captain Officers, Mariners and Seamen ſurprizing and taking the ſame, one third Part to the uſe of their Majesties, their Heirs and Succeſſors, and the other third Part ſhall be paid to the Treaſurer of their Majeſties Navy for the time being, to be diſpoſed of for the purpoſes aforeſaid.

Provided always, and be it enacted, that if any Captains, or other Officers, Mariners or Seamen, who ſhall take ſuch Prize or Prizes, as aforeſaid, ſhall Imbezel, Purloine, Conceal, or Convey away, or put on ſhore, or cauſe or procure to be Imbezled, Purloined, Concealed or Conveyed away, or put on Shore any part or parcel of ſuch Goods or Marchandizes in any place whatſoever, other then their Majeſties Warehouſes of the ſaid Ports, as aforeſaid, ſuch Perſon ſo offending ſhall forfeit and looſe the whole ſhare, benefit and Advantage which otherwiſe he might or ought to have had in the Prize, whereof the Goods and Merchandizes ſo Imbezelled, Concealed or Conveyed away, or put on ſhore, were part or parcel, upon proof, thereof made, by one or more Witneſſes upon Oath, before the Commiſſioners of the Cuſtoms in the Port of London (if ſuch Goods and Merchandizes ſhall be ſo Imbezelled or put on ſhore in the ſaid Port, or in any place within the view or knowledge of any of the Officers of their Majeſties Cuſtoms belonging to the Port of London) and before the Chief Magiſtrate of the place, in the preſence of the Chief Officer of the Port, in any other Port where ſuch Prize Goods ſhall be Imported, which Oath the ſaid Commiſſioners of Cuſtoms in the Port of London, and the Chief Majeſtrate reſpectively, are hereby Required and Impowered to Adminiſter, and to Hear and Determine the ſaid matter without delay. And one Moiety of the ſaid Wares and Merchandizes ſhall be to the uſe of the Informer, and ſhall be delivered to him by Warrant of the ſaid Commiſſioners of the Cuſtoms in the Port of London or of the Chief Magiſtrate of the place, Signed and Sealed in the preſence of the Chief Officer of the Cuſtoms in ſuch Port reſpectively, and the other Moiety ſhall be to the uſe of their Majeſties, Their Heirs and Succeſſors.

And it is hereby further Enacted, That any Perſon, Seamen or other, concerned in any Prize, ſhall and may at any ſeaſonable time be permitted to ſee and purſue the Accounts of any Prize, that he or they may be ſatisfied whether the ſhares have been rightly Diſtributed, and the Commiſſioners for Prizes, and their Officers, are hereby Required to ſhew or cauſe to be ſhown unto ſuch Perſon or Perſons ſuch Accounts for their peruſal, and to take no more Fee or Reward for the ſame, then One Shilling for one Account at one time.

And for the better Encouragment of Officers, Seamen and Mariners, to unno the Enemy, and to attempt, and take or deſtroy Ships of War, and of force belonging to the Enemy: Be it further enacted, That in caſe any of their Majeſties Ships of War, or any private Man of War, ſhall take in Fight as Prize, or ſhall ſink, fire, or by any other means deſtroy any Ship of War, or any private Man of War belonging to t e French King or his Subjects, or in the ſervice of the French King, they ſhall receive and have as a reward for ſuch ſervice, for each piece of Ordnance, whether Iron or Braſs, in any ſuch ſhip of War, or private Man of War ſo ta • en or deſtroyed, Ten pounds, to be paid by the Commiſſioners for Prizes, out of their Majeſties ſhare of Prizes.

UPon reading this day at the Board a Report from the Right Honourable the Commiſſioners for executing the Office of Lord High Admiral of England, ſetting forth, That for the encouragement of the Commanders, Officers and Sea-men, ſerving in their Majeſties Ships, his Majeſty will be graciouſly pleaſed of his Royal Bounty, to grant unto them for their own uſe and benefit all Privateers of the Enemy which ſhall be taken by them, together with their Tackle, Apparel, Furniture and Lading, the ſame to be by them diſpoſed of for their beſt advantage, and the Proceed thereof diſtributed to the Commanders, Officers, and Sea-men on board their Majeſties Ships, which ſhall take the ſaid Privateers, according to the Proportions following, viz.

Note, That for Fiſh they give Oatmeal.

Multiply the Number of Men by the number of days you are to Victual, and that gives the number of pounds of Bread or Bisket. Then for Beer, divide by 60 the number of Gallons in a Hogſhead, and that divide by 4, gives the number of Tuns: As for Example, 112 Days. 40 Men. 60) 4480 (74 Hogſh. and 40 Gallons, which divide by 4, gives ¼) 74 (18 Tuns, and 2 Hogſheads, and 40 Gallons.

Then for your 4480 pounds of Bread, divide by 7 Four Pound pieces of Beef, and 2 Pound pieces of Pork, and Quarts of Peaſe (1/7) 4480 (640

Then for your 640 Quarts of Peaſe, divide by ¼ makes Gallons, and your Gallons divided by 8, makes Buſhels.

Then for your 640 Quarts of Peaſe, multiply by 3, and divide by 8, and it gives you the ſiz'd Fiſh, or in lieu thereof as many Gallons of Oat-meal.

Then for 240 Siz'd Fiſh, there is alſo as many Pounds of Butter.

Then for 240 pounds of Butter, twice ſo many pounds of Cheeſe.

Upon the paſſing your Account, you will be allowed a Tun of Cask per month for Water, and 3 Bisket Baggs for a 4th. Rate; for Iron Hoops ſmall Allowance.

Have a care to deduct your ⅛ part as well of Beer, Peaſe and Oatmeal by meaſure, as of Butter, Cheeſe and Bread by weight, to make good your waſte, for none dare diſpute it without detriment.

If you have any Proviſions to ſpare, or your Eights in England, the Victualler pays, viz.

For Bread 1 d. per pound. Beer 28 ſhill. per Tun. Beef 8 d. per Piece. Pork 5 d. per Piece. Peaſe 2 ſhill. 6 d. per Buſh. Oatmeal 4 ſhill. per Buſhel. Butter 3 d. ½ d. per pound. Cheeſe 1 d. ¾ ſ. per pound.

But what they do to the Southward I don't know.

If your Men have any Proviſions to ſpare that is due, beſure not to refuſe the buying of it, at ſuch Rates as Mony is to be got by it; as Bread at 5 s. 6 d. per Cent. 112 ll. to the 100; but have a care to reduce it to 16 Ounces to the pound. Beef and Pork at 4 d. per piece, which will turn to account. If you ſpend Oatmeal, beſure not to buy your Men out of it, for that will be loſs to you; but if you are to pay firſt Mony, you will receive 9 d. per Month, which you may buy for 6 d. if you let them have Mony before-hand.

After you have Victualled and Indented, you muſt ſet it down in your Book for that purpoſe, and keep your Debtors part together, that you may give a due charge to the Surveyor of Victualling, when you come to paſs your Account.

Proviſions you will receive ſometimes, which muſt always be charged to your Debtors part, as alſo Proviſions borrowed from other Ships.

Victualling other Ships Men muſt be kept an account of, with their true names and time of beginning and ending, and by what order Victuall'd; ſo that you may diſcount it with the Purſer of that Ship, either by Victuals back, or by Receipts, or Mony paid you for it.

At all times be careful, and ſtave no more Casks then neceſſity requires; for the King pays 5 ſhill. per Tun for Cooperage, beſides what you do your ſelf; for you will rarely find the number of Staves in any Cask, which you muſt deliver to Tunnage, namely 28 But-Staves to a Butt, 26 to a Punchion, 24 to a Hogſhead, and 22 to a Barrel. And note, that two Pieces of ſingle heading makes a Stave, as well Cantle pieces as Middle pieces.

Men will urge you to ſcuttle Beef, Pork, Peaſe, Oatmeal, if you'll be ruled by them, but you are ſure to pay for all your ſcuttled 4 d. per Butt, 3 d. ½ per Punchion, 3 d. per Hogſhead, and 2 d. ½ per Barrel Staves per piece, which avoid as often as you can.

Keep your Cheque book going, and l • t not a Muſter be made without your ſelf or Steward, to prevent your Victualling of Men in your own wrong, when prickt by the Clerk of the Cheque; for do not fancy that theſe ſtand for a Cypher, for they will out you of all your Proviſions.

You are allow'd 6 d. a Man per month neceſſary Mony, with which you are to buy Wood, Candles and Turnery-ware.

Your Lading Charges is 2 ſhill. per menſem. Your Adds Mony—3 ſhill. 4 d. per Month. You are Allow'd 4 d. per Tun of drawage of the whole Proviſions of Beer, all which the Victualler will pay you when you Indent.

You are allowed 8 d. per Man a month Extra-neceſſary Mony, which you are to receive when you Indent.

If you indent for a proportion of Men under 60, then you are allow'd 9 d. a man a month, but no Adds-mony.

Your under Gauge is according to what your Cask holds, viz.

A Butt 108 Gallons. Punchion 72 Hogſh. 54 Barrel 36

According to the Gauge, and what is leſs than there is under Gauge, and what is wanting of your Gauge, the Victualler will allow for it after the rate of 30 ſhill. per Tun, and ſometimes 28 ſhill.

Take the Account of the under Gauge as follows, Admit I was to take in 40 Butts or more, ſet down the number gradually 1, 2, 3, 4, &c. and ſo to 40, and ſet the mark on the Head againſt the Number, then add up all together, and divide the Total by 216, and the Quotient is Tuns.

If you take in Cheſhire Cheeſe for Suffolk, you muſt allow 3 ll. of Suffolk for 2 pound of Cheſhire.

If you take in Flower and Currents for Beef, and for Pork and Peaſe; you muſt have 3 pounds of Flower and half a pound of Currents for a piece of Beef, and piece of Pork and Peaſe.

All this you deliver by weight or meaſure; you muſt keep back the 8th. part for Waſte; you muſt take care that the weight be made after the rate of 14 Ounces to the pound, and that meaſure is 7 Pints to the Gallon.

If at any time you deliver to any other Ship, any proportion of Cask Bags or Iron Hoops, take a Receipt for the ſame, ſpecifying the particulars in words at length, and deliver none without an order from your Commander, and take a Receipt for the ſame.

If you go into any Harbour in the time of your Voyage, and enter into petty Warrant, you are to ſpecify in your Sea-Book the ending of Sea Victuals, and the beginning of Petty Warrant; and the ending of the ſame, and beginning of Sea Victuals.

In Petty Warrant you are allow'd 12 d. a man per month neceſſary Money, but not Adds Mony, Lading Charges and Drawage.

When you receive any Warrants from the Clerk of the Cheque for Victualling, be ſure (before you give it the Victualler) take a Copy of them, that you may know by caſting up your Warrants, what they amount to.

You muſt be ſure to return your Cask and Bisket Baggs, for they will make you pay 20 ſhill. per Tun for Cask, and 12 d. for each Bagg.

When you caſt your Petty Warrant up, you are not to caſt after the manner you caſt your Sea-Victuals; but you muſt take a particular Account how many Fiſh Days and how many Fleſh Days there are in that Warrant; ſo many pieces of Pork, Quarts of Peaſe; Fleſh-Days ½ a piece of Pork, ½ a piece of Beef, one 8th. part of Siz'd Fiſh, 2 ounces of Butter, and a quarter of a pound of Cheeſe, Bread, and Beer as above.

In Petty Warrant, you have 2 pound Loaves, and each man to have the half of it a day; when you make up your Petty Warrant account, make your ſelf Debitor and Creditor, as follows, that is, Debitor on the left hand to all Proviſions receiv'd, with Cask, Iron-Hoops and Bags, and on the right Hand Creditor, by what your Petty Warrant amounts to, and by Cask, Iron-hoops, and Bisket Baggs return'd.
