Anyone can now take and use these texts for their own purposes, but we respectfully request that due credit and attribution is given to their original source.</p>
            <p>Users should be aware of the process of creating the TCP texts, and therefore of any assumptions that can be made about the data.</p>
            <p>Text selection was based on the New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature (NCBEL). If an author (or for an anonymous work, the title) appears in NCBEL, then their works are eligible for inclusion. Selection was intended to range over a wide variety of subject areas, to reflect the true nature of the print record of the period. In general, first editions of a works in English were prioritized, although there are a number of works in other languages, notably Latin and Welsh, included and sometimes a second or later edition of a work was chosen if there was a compelling reason to do so.</p>
            <p>Image sets were sent to external keying companies for transcription and basic encoding. Quality assurance was then carried out by editorial teams in Oxford and Michigan. 5% (or 5 pages, whichever is the greater) of each text was proofread for accuracy and those which did not meet QA standards were returned to the keyers to be redone. After proofreading, the encoding was enhanced and/or corrected and characters marked as illegible were corrected where possible up to a limit of 100 instances per text. Any remaining illegibles were encoded as &lt;gap&gt;s. Understanding these processes should make clear that, while the overall quality of TCP data is very good, some errors will remain and some readable characters will be marked as illegible. Users should bear in mind that in all likelihood such instances will never have been looked at by a TCP editor.</p>
            <p>The texts were encoded and linked to page images in accordance with level 4 of the TEI in Libraries guidelines.</p>
            <p>Copies of the texts have been issued variously as SGML (TCP schema; ASCII text with mnemonic sdata character entities); displayable XML (TCP schema; characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or text strings within braces); or lossless XML (TEI P5, characters represented either as UTF-8 Unicode or TEI g elements).</p>

                  <hi>WORMWOOD,</hi> and <hi>GALL,</hi> on each ſide of it grow,</l>

                  <hi>CROSSES,</hi> and <hi>JEARS,</hi> this dolorous way do ſtrow,</l>

               <l>Here ſcatt'red a right Hand, there a right Eye,</l>

                  <l>A Thornie, Rough, Unpleaſant Path to thee,</l>
                  <l>Yet doe but trie it, what at firſt ſeems hard,</l>
                  <l>Will eaſie prove unto thee afterward.</l>
                  <l>For when thy heart, ſhall be enlarg'd with love,</l>
                  <l>Unto thoſe glorious things which are above;</l>

                  <l>Thou need'ſt not doubt of a continual Feaſt.</l>
                  <l>Ask thoſe that follow <hi>WISDOM,</hi> and they'l ſay,</l>
                  <l>They feed on hidden <hi>MANNA</hi> in their way,</l>
                  <l>By arts of <hi>FAITH,</hi> and <hi>LOVE,</hi> they now poſſeſs,</l>
                  <l>That inward Sweetneſs, which they cann't expreſs.</l>
                  <l>Strong <hi>CONSOLATIONS</hi> here do fill their <hi>C<g ref="char:V">Ʋ</g>P,</hi>

                  <l>Whil'ſt with eternal <hi>LOVE</hi> their Souls do Sup.</l>

               <l>I underſtand not how theſe <hi>JOYES</hi> commence,</l>

               <l>Therefore forbear untill thou offer'ſt that,</l>
               <l>Which may be ſuited to my preſent State.</l>

               <l>Fond <hi>YO<g ref="char:V">Ʋ</g>TH,</hi> thou know'ſt not what is true delight,</l>
               <l>It's not to pleaſe the ſenſual <hi>APPETIT,</hi>
               </l>
               <l>This will debaſe thy <hi>NAT<g ref="char:V">Ʋ</g>RE,</hi> and the <hi>FR<g ref="char:V">Ʋ</g>IT,</hi>
               </l>
               <l>Will be to lay thee level with the <hi>BR<g ref="char:V">Ʋ</g>ITE.</hi>

               <l>That which ennobles, and doth truly raiſe,</l>
               <l>Are <hi>VISIONS,</hi> of thoſe <hi>BEAMS</hi> which <hi>GOD</hi> diſplayes,</l>

               <l>What canſt thou offer now unto my <hi>EYE,</hi>

               <l>That will the <hi>GLORY</hi> of this <hi>WORLD</hi> outvie.</l>

               <l>Whilſt thou a darkſom <hi>RIDDLE</hi> this doſt call,</l>
               <l>Thou ſhow'ſt thy woful Darkneſs ſince the fall,</l>
               <l>For though an inſtinct ſtill remains to <hi>BLISS,</hi>

               <l>Yet wanteſt Light to guide thee where it is.</l>

               <l>So far as they may real bleſſings prove:</l>
               <l>If what thou haſt be mixed with a curſe,</l>

               <l>Yet thou wilt venture fooliſhly to ſtray,</l>

               <l>But ſhould'ſt <hi>thou</hi> ſpared be, it hard would prove,</l>

               <l>Not worth the caring for? and wilt thou hate</l>

               <l>Unto thy ſelf? oh, wretched <hi>CRVELTY!</hi>

               <l>VVithin her Houſe, a ſlaughtered SACRIFICE,</l>

               <l>And fills his fleſh with pain, his breſt with groans;</l>

               <l>That flings down <hi>STARS,</hi> and doth the <hi>HEAVENS</hi> ſhake;</l>
               <l>That makes thoſe vaſt <hi>EXPANSIONS</hi> for to roul,</l>
               <l>And ſhrink themſelves together, like a ſcroul?</l>
               <l>How ſhall <hi>I</hi> ſtand before that dreadful <hi>THRONE,</hi>

               <l>From whence bright <hi>Lightnings</hi> &amp; great <hi>Thundrings</hi> come?</l>

               <l>The <hi>Firy Pinchers,</hi> which deep <hi>Wounds</hi> do tear,</l>
               <l>That <hi>ſcalding</hi> SULPHUR may be poured there;</l>
               <l>The <hi>Stripes</hi> of SCORPIONS, that long Furrows make,</l>
               <l>With cutting SAWS that through the <hi>MARROW</hi> rake:</l>

               <l>Adding great <hi>Anguiſh</hi> to my <hi>Tortur'd Mind,</hi>
